Should a Non-fiction book about Mafia be a factual, textbook-ish, non-judgmental piece of writing or should it have a moral lesson that paints the gory, bloody side of the criminal life & highlights the ill effects, the illegality and the moral turpitude of the mobsters ?

On the outset, the book appears to only chronicle the infamous don's life story but then the author gets into this Mario Puzo style of recounting the entire yesteryear Mumbai mafia's transformation from one phase into another not to mention the feeble attempt to make you-know-who be given a Vito Corleone-ish shade.

Starts off very well and gives great insights into the history of underworld in Mumbai. The narration is taut and it almost feels like that you are reading the script of a Bollywood film. The book starts off very well and the first half will remind u of movies like Deewar, Dayavan and has a lot of filmy conversations (dont know what is the source). Don't want to rate it yet, but I was skeptical when I started it as I think no one wrote about the Mumbai mafia better than Suketu Mehta in Maximum City, my all time favorite Indian book. But I have read 86 pages and it's fabulously written, a real chronicle, well researched and a passion surely for this writer. Reads like a screen play. It also brings back memories of so many gundas from the movies, now I know where a lot of writers get their fodder from.

The spinechilling anecdotes of India's notorious criminal crafted by Hussain Zaidi is defintely a book to be read. With a potpourri of inflamatory dialogues and gory pictorial description, he has managed to recreate the atmosphere of crime in me.
