The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an American long-haul, mid-size widebody, twin-engine jet airliner made by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its variants seat 242 to 335 passengers in typical three-class seating configurations. It is Boeing's most fuel-efficient airliner and is a pioneering airliner with the use of composite materials as the primary material in the construction of its airframe. The 787 was designed to be 20% more fuel efficient than the Boeing 767, which it was intended to replace. The 787 Dreamliner's distinguishing features include mostly electrical flight systems, raked wingtips, and noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles.

The first 787 was unveiled in a roll-out ceremony on July 8, 2007 at Boeing's Everett factory. Development and production of the 787 has involved a large-scale collaboration with numerous suppliers worldwide. Final assembly takes place at the Boeing Everett Factory in Everett, Washington, and at the Boeing South Carolina factory in North Charleston, South Carolina. Originally planned to enter service in May 2008, the project experienced multiple delays. The airliner's maiden flight took place on December 15, 2009, and completed flight testing in mid-2011. Boeing has reportedly spent $32 billion on the 787 program.

The VMax model is based on the 787-8, the smallest 787 offered by Boeing, and in this review, I will be exploring the different features that this X-Plane model comes with, whilst giving an honest opinion on the aircraft.
One thing worth mentioning is that Heinz Dziurowitz, the original developer for this aircraft and a respected member of the X-Plane community, sadly passed away in 2015. VMax acquired the rights of the aircraft and re-released it for X-Plane 11.

Download And Install
When downloading this aircraft from the FSPilotShop, you are provided with a ZIP file, which when extracted, contains the aircraft folder. When installing additional aircraft inside X-Plane, it is good practice to create a new folder inside the Aircraft directory, labeled 'Add-on Aircraft'. This allows you to reinstall your additional aircraft with ease. In terms of DRM, no license key is required for this product.
Two PDF files are included inside the 'Documents' folder, a 25-page user manual and a 17-page reference manual. This includes numbers and values important to the operation of the aircraft.

Exterior Model
The first thing that needs to be mentioned is that this particular 787 originally started out as an X-Plane 9 model, later ported over to X-Plane 10, and then again into X-Plane 11. The original package released by Heinz Dziurowitz was developed and released through 2008/2009, meaning this product was in effect, already quite old when VMax decided to release it for X-Plane 11.
With that said, I think it's fair to say that the exterior model is not the best I've seen. Whilst from some angles the aircraft looks convincing (such as the engines and some minor detailing across the body), there are quite a few issues which hold it back. The one area that bugs me the most is the shape of the nose and windshield of the aircraft. With the nose, the angles are off and don't resemble the aircraft at all, and with the windows, the gaps are far too narrow, especially those placed at the front. When this model was originally released for X-Plane 9, people praised it as being one of the best models out there, but unfortunately it has not stood the test of time.
Another area for concern is the wings. The developers claim that the aircraft features the in-flight wingflex that the Boeing 787 is iconic for when in-flight, and while this is sort of true, the VMax model (I have learnt) only partially simulates this. Also, when on the ground, the wings are pitched far too high and are not long enough. The result is that this partially distorts the shape of the aircraft and looks odd. Also the Rolls Royce logo on the engine of each aircraft floats slightly over the engine. Since X-Plane 11 simulates shadows, it now imposes it onto the engine cowling, rather than the logo.
Animations are also (unfortunately) poorly done. When turning the yokes to the left and right, the spoilers will raise way too fast, especially when compared to a real 787. Also, they are mismatched in terms of their deployment angles and look uneven.

Basic normal mapping, similar to bump mapping (gives the illusion of a 3D shape) has been added to the aircraft, but is very limited. This feature is only present on the main fuselage, meaning no panel gaps have been defined across the wings, engines or landing gear.
There are some positives though, as there is a degree of detailing along the roof of the aircraft. The engines too have been modelled fairly well and do a good job of looking like the real thing. The undercarriage is accurate and the rear of the aircraft is also done to an acceptable level.

An area that this aircraft really does excel in though is in regards to lighting. It looks fantastic and really gives the 787 some character. The 787's lights have all been positioned in their correct locations and being volumetric, light up everything which surrounds them!
